If Instagram changes, We change. If Instagram strikes, WE strike too…

Posted by admin on 18 Dic 2012 / 0 Comment

Here’s the news: Instagram changes its terms of use. Starting next January, user content (even the existing one) could be used by Instagram for commercial and marketing activities without the users being informed or – worse – receiving royalties on their use.
Wait, it’s ok. I mean, it’s legal.
A Service Provider has the right to change the terms of use without notice. But…
But when a phenomenon like Instagram is bought by Facebook for a billion dollars you enter a totally different scenario.
It ‘s obvious, however, that now the crystal will have a crack. Users are disappointed and feel betrayed. It will be difficult to regain the trust.
I’ve beek asked an opinion on what to do? Wether to opt out and delete all the uploaded content or protest or whatever.
Obviously I do not know and it’s not up to me to give recommendation. I just would like to highlight that in our legal system (italian) that would have been hardly possible, because new terms and conditions may apply to the future and not the past. It would be like saying that a telephone operator changes (legitimately) telephone rates with retroactive effect and then asks the arrears to the user.
Now, what can we do. Very little, I’m afraid, apart from the most drastic move of opting out and cancel our content. Unless …
I would tend to exclude high-impact actions like loading a bunch of crappy images of poor and embarrassing quality, perhaps with a watermark like “sell this now”. We could….STRIKE… Yes, an #instastrike and stop the flow of uploading for one or two days.
This would only work if a critical mass of users does it, of course. But at any rate may be an early warning to Instagram. At least to demand that the new terms apply to future uploads, and not to those of the past.
I admit I’m a little upset to learn that i my private shots (more or less beautiful) are not only sold without my knowledge (it is a thing that can happen regardless) but are used for any other purpose unknown to me. And not just the pictures! Even my avatar, my comments, my likes.
In a nutshell, my privacy.
Suddenly Instagram decide they can use our ideas, our words, our images.
I say it again: it’ legal,  because it’s a private company. However, it’s NOT OK. You cannot, Mr Instagram, become billioner thanks to million of users worldwide and get away with it now.  It’s not fair…
You’re breaking the toy; you’re ruin a game.
I think a #instastrike would be good sign. It would send you a reminder that WE, THE (instagram) People are not fool 😉
Cheers,
A
