The dark (and revealing) side of the Moon. Aka what you learn from Instagram

Posted by admin on 12 Mar 2014 / 0 Comment

Think!

Instagram had an strong impact on modern “easy” storytelling.  I lately wrote that Instagram is the Ikea of Photography (http://www.shoot4change.net/b4c/2013/12/07/instagram-ikea-della-fotografia/) because, at the same time, made once again Photography popular and accessibile by a multitude of People but lowered the threshold of creativity by a standard aesthetics. Just as Ikead did and does: everybody now can have a cheaper access to good looking furnitures, enjoying a design experience and indulging in the pleasure of furnishing his/her apts with nicers pieces. But at the end of the day, everybody in the World will have a Billy scaffolds and all houses will look the same.

Ok, I might have exaggerated a little bit, but you got what I mean, right? Yeah, you do. Because we are all the same on Instagram. We have fun!

What I love on Instagram – apart sharing easy images of what I eat, drink, see, selfies, etc etc – is learning more about those I “follow”.

I’m egocentric. Therefore, I used to spend time in the “notification” section of IG just to see who “liked” my pics. Pretty reasonable. You do that, too, right? Yes, you do.

But when I started indulging in the next tab of that very section…BANG! 🙂

I learnt that I could see what those I follow actually like and who they follow. Interesting…

After spending some time you really realize IG is a great cauldron with virtually everything in it. And full of surprises.

Some of my favorite iphoeographers actually keep “liking” absolutely amazing images of other great photographers. And it’s a pleasure to follow them. You see how “photography taste” is built and how it grows by being alimentated by other nice images.

But it’s even more fun when you see other nice and famous photographers liking absolutely insulse images or – worse – selfies of kids, teen, young ladies or pretty young boys. And it is sick when it’s done by adults you had a high consideration of (also photography wise).

So, think! Think of what you upload and think (think!!!) of what you like because you leave traces of it…

C’mon…think!

And when you are over thinking, have fun.

Long live Instagram!
